Vancouver, B.C. – On the heels of a series of horrific and tragic events targeting police officers – including the murders of a Montreal, OPP, and TPS officer and serious injuries of two RCMP Members in Saskatchewan, the National Police Federation (NPF), Canada’s largest police union, is condemning acts of violence against police officers across Canada and calling for renewed attention to the growing risks faced by law enforcement and other first responders every day.

“Our thoughts are with every police officer, first responder, and family member affected by these tragic events,” said NPF President Rob Farrer. “Behind every badge is a real person, a family, and a community that shares in the sacrifices and consequences of violence directed at those who serve.”

“Violence against police officers is disgusting, intolerable, and must never be normalized as ‘part of the job,’” added Farrer. “Police officers, like all of us, deserve to go home to their families at the end of their shift. They deserve the highest level of protection and safety. No compromise, and no excuses.”

The NPF is calling on all levels of government and public safety stakeholders to continue strengthening measures that support officer safety, address threats of violence against first responders, and ensure law enforcement personnel have the resources, training, and protections they need to carry out their duties safely.

Police officers routinely respond to unpredictable and dangerous situations, often placing themselves in harm’s way to protect others. They answer calls for help, intervene in crises, and move toward danger when others are fleeing from it.

As police services across Canada continue to grieve and support one another, the National Police Federation encourages Canadians to reach out to police in their community to recognize these losses, and to express their appreciation for the work they do every day.

About the National Police Federation:

The National Police Federation (NPF) represents ~20,000 RCMP Members serving across Canada and internationally. We are the largest police union in Canada. The NPF is focused on improving public safety for all Canadians, including our Members by advocating for much-needed investment in the public safety continuum. This includes investments in police resourcing and modern equipment, as well as social programs including health, addiction, and housing supports to enhance safety and livability in the many communities we serve, large and small, across Canada.
