Moncton, NB – Below is a statement from the National Police Federation Atlantic/Central Board Director, Pat Bouchard, regarding the theft of a bronze maple leaf from the Moncton Memorial Honour Garden.
“On behalf of our 20,000 Members across Canada, we are disgusted and angered by the theft of a bronze maple leaf from the Moncton Memorial Honour Garden that honours Constables Douglas Larche, Dave Ross, and Fabrice Gevaudan, three RCMP Members who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to Canadians when they were murdered in 2014 in one of the deadliest attacks on RCMP Members in history.
The stolen leaf carried the fingerprints of more than 1,500 people, including loved ones, first responders, and members of the Moncton community. It is a deeply personal symbol of remembrance and connection, and it’sloss is heartbreaking.
The RCMP are vigorously investigating this theft, and we hope those responsible will face the full extend of the law. This theft is a slap in the face to the families and loved ones of these Members, who carry this loss with them every day. It is also an insult to all Fallen Members and their families across Canada, whose sacrifices are honoured through memorials like this one.
Memorials honouring Fallen Members are sacred places that recognize the extraordinary service and devotion of those who put on the uniform and never came home.
We stand with the families of these Fallen Members and with the people of Moncton in condemning this act. We urge anyone with information to come forward and help ensure the stolen memorial piece is recovered and those responsible are held accountable.”
