Moncton, NB – Below is a statement from Atlantic Regional Director, Pat Bouchard, following yesterday’s sentencing of Edva Mascary, who stabbed and attempted to murder RCMP Member Const. Marc Antoine Latouche while officers responded to a call in August 2025:
“Across Canada, police officers are facing a disturbing rise in violence, shootings, stabbings, assaults, and targeted attacks. Police leaders across the country have been sounding the alarm and calling for urgent action. Yesterday’s lenient sentencing outcome for an accused guilty of attempting to murder a police officer last year only reinforces those concerns.
The National Police Federation is disgusted by the resolution of this case. Cst. Latouche was violently attacked while responding to a call for service and was stabbed multiple times in the head. This was a deliberate and dangerous assault that could easily have cost him his life.
A sentence that will see an offender who stabbed a police officer in the head multiple times serve only four and a half years (with credit for time served awaiting trial) behind bars, if that, fails to reflect the gravity of this violence and once again risks undermining public confidence in the legal system’s ability to hold violent offenders accountable. It also sends a demoralizing message to first responders nationwide that if their lives are threatened, the Court system will not have their back.
For nearly a year, this Member and his family have been living with the consequences of that attack. We heard in court that he continues to suffer lasting effects from his injuries, affecting both his personal life and his ability to do the job he loves. No officer should have to carry those burdens because they answered a call for help.
Violence against police officers must never be normalized, minimized, or accepted as part of the job. Despite significant training, risk assessment, and other protections, the work police officers do is inherently dangerous. Our Members deserve to know that when they are purposefully and violently attacked in the line of duty, the legal system will respond with the seriousness those actions warrant.
The National Police Federation continues to call for meaningful bail reform and broader action to address the escalating violence facing police officers and other first responders across Canada. Our Members, and all Canadians, deserve a legal system that holds violent offenders fully accountable.”
