Victoria, B.C. – Following is a statement from Brian Sauvé, President and C.E.O. of the National Police Federation, regarding the Province of British Columbia’s recently announced $6 million investment in the Special Investigation and Targeted Enforcement (SITE) program:

“We welcome the B.C. Government’s continued investment in the Special Investigation and Targeted Enforcement (SITE) program, an essential tool making a real and measurable difference in community safety across the province.

SITE has proven to be a highly effective model for identifying and addressing repeat violent offenders to law enforcement agencies across British Columbia, including funding RCMP-led projects that target prolific repeat violent offenders in communities such as Cranbrook, Kelowna, Surrey, Prince George, and others. We have been advocating for governments of all levels to implement bail reform initiatives and are encouraged to see the Province of B.C. take action on this longstanding issue plaguing our communities and wasting valuable police resources. This additional $6 million will support Members and police agencies in continuing to implement evidence-based, intelligence-led approaches that keep our communities safer.

As part of the 2026 B.C. pre-budget process, the NPF recently submitted recommendations highlighting the need for further resources for bail reform, among other asks. We’re encouraged to see these needs reflected in last week’s announcement. In 2023, the NPF released a comprehensive report on bail reform, outlining actionable recommendations for provinces to better address the issues surrounding repeat violent offenders. Since then, we’ve seen many provinces implement several of those recommendations, and we are pleased to see B.C. take even further action and demonstrate its ongoing commitment to tackling this issue.

Our Members who serve across British Columbia remain committed to collaborative enforcement models like SITE that prioritize public safety and aim to keep violent repeat offenders off the streets. These programs require sustained investment, consistent inter-agency coordination, and strong political will to deliver lasting outcomes.

We look forward to continuing our engagement with the Province of B.C. to ensure our Members are supported in this critical work, and that British Columbians continue to see improvements and feel safe in their communities.”
