Terrace B.C. – The following is a statement from National Police Federation President and CEO, Brian Sauvé in response to a statement from the British Columbia General Employee’s Union following an arrest in Terrace, B.C.

“We are disgusted by the inaccurate and over-reaching statement from the BCGEU regarding an arrest over two weeks ago in Terrace, B.C. Our Members’ work is very different from that of most BCGEU employees involving high-risk and split-second decisions to keep their community safe. We would encourage the BCGEU to focus on their own mandate to represent government service workers rather than issuing inaccurate and highly politicized communications targeting dedicated and professional RCMP Members.

Bluntly put, the BCGEU description of what happened is inaccurate and without context. As described by the RCMP directly, the individual seen in the video on social media was chasing RCMP officers up a stairwell while apparently attempting to touch or remove the officers’ equipment from their duty belt following a prior arrest of a second individual. To protect themselves and other bystanders, the officer arrested the pursuer to address the threat posed.

These brief videos never show the full story of the risk our Members face, or the measures taken previously to de-escalate the situation. This was a lawful and necessary arrest to keep Members and civilians safe.

The National Police Federation supports accountability and transparency, and we will not stand silently by while unfounded accusations make attempts to politicize issues, create conflict where there is none, and tarnish or misrepresent the professionalism and risks our Members face every day to protect their communities.”
