Charlottetown, PEI — Following is a statement from National Police Federation (NPF) President and C.E.O. Brian Sauvé in response to Prince Edward Island’s release of new policing standards for police services across the province:
“We are pleased to see Prince Edward Island release its new policing standards, an important step toward strengthening public safety and supporting the police officers who serve Islanders every day. The National Police Federation participated in consultations on their development and appreciated the opportunity to contribute and engage with the Policing Standards Working Group.
The NPF represents nearly 20,000 RCMP Members serving communities across Canada, including more than 200 dedicated Members in PEI. After reviewing the standards, we are encouraged by the direction the Provincehas taken. The framework reflects the realities of modern policing and supports positive outcomes for both police officers and the public they serve.
Across Canada, independent reviews have consistently shown that the RCMP already meets and often already exceeds evolving policing standards. The RCMP’s integrated model, national reach, and access to specialized resources support consistent, high-quality service, particularly in smaller and rural communities. RCMP Members in PEI deliver professional, community-focused policing and stand ready to meet the expectations set out in these new standards.
At the same time, standards are only effective if there are clear and practical mechanisms for implementation and enforcement. Without proper oversight and accountability, even well-intentioned standards risk being applied inconsistently across police services. Ensuring all police services are properly supported and resourced is essential for public confidence and officer safety.
Our Members remain committed to working collaboratively with the Government of Prince Edward Island and policing partners to ensure compliance over the next 24 months. RCMP Members in PEI will continue to serve Islanders with professionalism and dedication today and well into the future.”
