Prince George, B.C.– The following is a statement from Brian Sauvé, President and CEO of the National Police Federation, regarding today’s sentencing of former RCMP Member Arthur Dalman.
“Today’s sentencing brings a close to a long and difficult chapter for a former Member and his family. While the Court has rendered its decision, we are disappointed and troubled by this outcome.
We believe this sentence overlooks important context, including the Member’s short length of service, previously strong character, and the extraordinary delay in getting here. It also raises broader questions about accountability and consistency when wider issues are acknowledged, yet responsibility ultimately lands on one individual.
This case has stretched more than seven years and has taken a real toll. Prolonged investigations and court proceedings carry real consequences. Long investigations and court proceedings don’t happen in a vacuum — they affect families, careers, and wellbeing.
The process has also been marked by hostility toward our Members and representatives attending court, underscoring the need for everyone participating in the justice system to do so safely and without intimidation. Timely and fair processes matter for everyone involved.
We will continue to stand behind our Members as they navigate difficult situations like this, and we will keep pushing for a court process that is fair, timely, and accountable so they can move forward with their lives.”
