The National Police Federation, which represents ~20,000 RCMP members across Canada and internationally thanks and supports our members who have been enforcing court-ordered injunctions and the relevant laws of Canada in relation to various protest actions across our country.
We appreciate the difficulty of this situation, and the complexities of acting on a Court decision related to Indigenous governance between elected and hereditary Chiefs. At the same time, we are proud of and support our members’ actions and professionalism in this complex situation.
RCMP members have sworn an oath to respectfully and professionally enforce the laws of Canada. Our officers carry out this oath consistent with their responsibility to respect the rights of all persons; to maintain the integrity of the law, law enforcement and the administration of justice; and to perform the member’s duties promptly, impartially and diligently, in accordance with the law and without abusing the member’s authority.
RCMP officers have acted to protect and preserve public safety in trying and highly contentious circumstances — often at their own personal risk — time and time again throughout Canada’s history.
We hope for a peaceful and mutually satisfactory resolution to this situation for the public and our members soon, and that they will return to their families and communities safely.
