About Michael Hillman
The NPF appointed Michael Hillman as Independent Election Advisor, effective July 2026, and he will oversee NPF elections and make final decisions on election process matters as required.
Michael brings years of experience in the operation and conduct of elections at all levels of government. He has reported on expenses and met audit requirements of Elections Canada, Elections BC and the City of Burnaby. All audits have complied with set rules and regulations. He also participated in a federal election recount process.
Various societies have engaged Michael to conduct their elections and to chair their Annual General Meetings. Of note are two critical elections at the Guru Nanak Gurdwara Society in Surrey. He has also provided his services to the Burnaby Hindu Temple to conduct their Annual General meetings and Board elections, including setting up a drive through election requiring permission from BC Health during Covid. Michael has also assisted the Vedic Hindu Cultural Society and the Ross Street Temple with the conduct of elections.
Michael has volunteered as campaign manager and has chaired campaigns, and has an appreciation of the desire of candidates, their energy and their commitment to serve. Michael was a candidate in the 1984 federal general election in Burnaby and was elected in a City of Burnaby civic by-election in 2020. He served the Honourable Iona Campagnolo, then Minister of State for Fitness and Amateur Sport, and Senator Jack Austin when he was the Minister of State for Social Development.
Michael has been a lead in; directing the 1988 Vancouver Winter Olympic bid; the bid for and set up of EXPO ’86; as a Deputy Project Manager in building the SkyTrain Expo line; coordinating the bid by Victoria to be the Canadian bid city to host the Commonwealth Games; the bid by the Royal Canadian Golf Association and then the hosting of the World Amateur Golf Team Championships; and, leading Vancouver’s participation in YES ’89 in Japan.
