From June 15-17, 2025, world leaders will gather in the stunning Canadian Rockies for the 50th G7 Leaders’ Summit. This high-profile event aims to find collaborative solutions for some of the world’s biggest challenges.
During an event of this caliber, ensuring the safety of world leaders, delegates, and the public is paramount, and Members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are stepping up to the challenge with their scalable model, bringing in not just our Alberta RCMP Members, but RCMP from across the country and highly skilled specialized services Members.
But what kind of specialized services are even required for something like this? Meet the incredible RCMP teams providing security at the G7 Summit:
1. Protective Policing
These officers ensure VIPs (like our Prime Minister and other world leaders) stay safe and secure. They are the personal bodyguards of dignitaries, trained in close protection, risk assessment, and emergency response. Basically, Canada’s Secret Service agents.

2. Emergency Response Team (ERT)
Think of the ERT as the action stars of the RCMP. Ready to tackle high-risk and evolving situations, they come equipped with advanced gear to address any immediate dangers.

3. Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU)
The EDU is all about keeping things safe from explosive threats. Using bomb disposal robots and cutting-edge detection tools, they make sure any suspicious devices are handled and disposed of safely.

4. Integrated Safety and Security Group (ISSG)
A collaboration powerhouse, bringing together the RCMP, Canadian Armed Forces, Calgary Police Service, and Alberta Sheriffs, this team coordinates security efforts seamlessly.

5. National Cybercrime Coordination Centre (NC3)
Members of the RCMP are focused on more than physical security: in our modern world, digital and cyber threats are just as important to monitor and mitigate. This highly trained unit protects critical infrastructure and sensitive information from cyber threats, keeping the summit’s digital world secure.
6. Traffic Services
Smooth traffic flow is essential during large events. Members of the RCMP traffic services team work with local authorities to implement road closures, traffic diversions, and access controls, ensuring everything runs like clockwork.

7. General Duty and Community Policing
General Duty and community policing Members also play an integral role in these operations. Not only will they be brought in from throughout the country to keep G7 attendees safe, but they also help provide relief to detachments throughout the region so they can continue to keep residents in local cities and towns safe. General Duty Members monitor and patrol various venues to establish and maintain security. Community police officers are all about keeping residents informed, addressing concerns, and fostering positive relationships, making sure everyone feels supported.
8. Air Services
Highly skilled helicopter pilots and drone operators provide aerial surveillance and transportation support, giving Members of the RCMP on the ground a pair of eyes in the sky to monitor large areas and gather intelligence.

9. Police Dog Services (PDS)
Police Dogs work with their handlers during high-security events to do a variety of important tasks including perimeter patrol and bomb detection. These specialized and highly trained four-legged partners are experts in tracking and identifying nefarious packages – from explosive residue to narcotics and everything in between.
