As you likely have seen or heard, the Alberta government has announced the Alberta Sheriffs Police Service as their latest version of the previously proposed Alberta Provincial Police Service, as well as named its Chief. The province claims this is in response to lack of clarity around the renewal of RCMP contracts beyond 2032 despite the previous Government’s clarification that contracts would be renewed.

This follows the recent launch of the highly politicized and clearly biased Alberta Next survey, panel and roadshow aiming to push the provincial police service – a failed and expensive idea that has consistently been rejected by Albertans since the Fair Deal Panel announced in 2019.

Given these two announcements, we anticipate discussion across Canada about the implications for the RCMP in Alberta and elsewhere.

We have shared countless times with the provincial government that consistent independent public opinion surveys have shown that ~86% of Albertans in rural and RCMP-served areas want to keep the RCMP in their communities, with only a small 7% minority interested in switching to a new police service. These high levels of support and satisfaction are a reflection of the professionalism and dedication you demonstrate daily.

For several years, the NPF’s Keep Alberta RCMP campaign has galvanized support from municipalities and tens of thousands of Albertans. We will be redoubling our efforts to correct misinformation and demand – at minimum – that the Government implement a fair, transparent public consultation process in Alberta to hear from Albertans directly that they want to keep their hardworking Members in their communities and their province.

We know that this criticism by government and negative media coverage is demoralizing but please know that you have strong public support, and we have your back. We will continue to keep you updated on our efforts as the campaign progresses. For now, please look out for one another, tune out the noise, and thank you for your service.

Sincerely,
