Vancouver, B.C. – The National Police Federation (NPF) welcomes yesterday’s announcement from Public Safety Minister and Solicitor General Nina Krieger confirming that the Government of British Columbia will continue its strong and effective policing partnership with the RCMP.

“We applaud the Province for listening to British Columbians, who have consistently expressed their trust and confidence in the RCMP,” said Brian Sauvé, President and CEO of the National Police Federation. “This decision reflects public sentiment, effective public safety practices, and supports a proven policing model that keeps communities safe while delivering exceptional value for taxpayers.”

For more than 75 years, the BC RCMP has delivered trusted, professional, and community-focused policing across more than 150 municipalities and over 200 Indigenous communities. British Columbians have consistently voiced their support, with 78% of residents in RCMP-served areas reporting satisfaction with their police service.

“As B.C. continues to grow, the focus must now shift to strengthening RCMP resourcing — including our 2026 pre- budget asks of investing $250 million over the next three years to hire more Members, modernize equipment, and $7.5 million in smart bail reform to meet rising public safety needs,” Sauvé added. “In 2022, the province took an important step by investing $230 million over three years to fill 256 previously unfunded RCMP positions. The RCMP has delivered in hiring these Members, restoring its 2012 authorized strength.

However, this $230 million dollar funding will end at the end of this year. With continued population growth and rising demands on policing, including organized crime, natural disaster response, and serious rural crime, further investments will be essential.  We look forward to working with the province to build on this investment, and to renew the Police Services Agreement beyond 2032 to ensure ongoing RCMP policing excellence for all British Columbians.”

The RCMP’s integrated, flexible model provides local strength with national reach, giving communities access to more than 150 specialized services and the ability to rapidly deploy additional resources during wildfires, floods, and other emergencies. Supported by roughly $300 million in annual federal contributions, the RCMP remains the most cost-effective, capable, and sustainable policing model for the province.
