St. John’s, NL – The following is a statement from National Police Federation President and C.E.O., Brian Sauvé, in response to recent claims about equitable funding calls for police officers in Newfoundland and Labrador.
“For years, the National Police Federation has advocated for adequate resourcing for our Members serving in Newfoundland and Labrador, particularly in rural and remote communities. Our campaign is not, and has never been, about taking away from or competing with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.
We and our Members deeply value the RNC as policing partners. Our shared goal is to keep all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians safe, regardless of where they live or which badge serves them.
Our call for equitable funding means ensuring the RCMP receives the appropriate resources to serve over 55% of the province’s population across 80% of its landmass—often in challenging, remote areas with growing and complex policing needs. This is about fairness based on responsibility, geography, demand and most importantly public safety—not rivalry.
We call on the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to invest in both the RCMP and RNC appropriately and equitably, without reducing support for either service, to meet the unique needs of all communities across the province.
The uniform may differ, but the mission does not. We are all police officers committed to public safety, and we will continue to advocate for sustained, evidence-based investment in all policing services to best serve the people of this province.”
