Toronto, ON – The following is a statement from National Police Federation President and C.E.O., Brian Sauvé, following today’s announcement from the Government of Canada to increase the RCMP Cadet Training Allowance, reaffirm the hiring of 1,000 new RCMP personnel, and strengthen Canada’s Criminal Code to address repeat and violent offenders.
“The National Police Federation has long advocated for a fair and competitive training allowance for RCMP Cadets, who are the future of Canada’s national police service. Today’s announcement increasing the Cadet Training Allowance from $525 to $1,000 per week marks a significant and welcome step toward modernizing RCMP recruitment and better supporting those who answer the call to serve.
This investment removes a major financial barrier for new recruits and will help the RCMP continue to attract top-tier candidates in a highly competitive labour market.
We also commend the federal government’s ongoing commitment to hire 1,000 new RCMP personnel. Expanding sworn police officers is a critical step to strengthening public safety and meet the evolving needs of communities across Canada. The NPF stresses the importance of ensuring these new positions are all sworn Members, as Canadians expect and deserve well-trained, accountable police officers serving our communities.
We look forward to reviewing the government’s forthcoming bail reform legislation. The measures previewed today sound promising, and we welcome continued collaboration to strengthen Canada’s public safety framework and deliver meaningful improvements for both our Members and the Canadians they serve.”
