The National Police Federation Benevolent Foundation (NPFBF) is widely known for providing support to the families of Fallen Members, both on and off duty, and in addition to this critical work, the Foundation also provides financial assistance to students across Canada who are embarking on studies related to the field of public safety and have displayed leadership, support, and compassion for their communities.

We know post-secondary education can be expensive, and so the NPFBF is here to help support aspiring public safety leaders through various publicly available grants. These grants will help offset the cost of things like tuition, residence, or the university kid staple of rice and frozen vegetables. All told, bursaries are available for the public through two streams:

  1. The annual Gordon Clarke Bursary ($5,000), presented to one student anywhere in Canada that demonstrate exceptional leadership, academic excellence, compassion, and support for their community.
  1. One of 12 available regional bursaries ($2,500 each) with four bursaries available per region: Pacific/North, Prairies, and Atlantic/Central
  1. For RCMP and NPF Members, there are even bursary opportunities for the spouses and children of Members. Learn more about those opportunities here

Paying it forward through bursaries that support public safety higher education for eligible students across Canada supports students, honours the memories of our Fallen Members, and nurtures the next generation of Canadian public safety leaders. In total, the NPFBF Bursary Program distributes $47,500 annually to eligible students across Canada.

Students interested in studying in a field like policing, firefighting, paramedics, nursing (with mental health specializations), mental health and addictions treatment, cyber-security, security, intelligence and defense studies, conflict studies, disaster and emergency management, and more, are all eligible to apply and bee considered for the NPFBF’s robust Bursary Program. Essentially, if you are studying to become a real-life superhero, these are the bursaries for you!

Deeper Dive: Who is Gordon Clarke?

The Gordon Clark Bursary honours the life and meaningful career of Gordon Clark who was widely known and loved as a very caring and compassionate RCMP Member, highly respected by all who have met and known him. He served as a dedicated Member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and led an exemplary career serving Canadians in various capacities for over a 60-year career in policing.

This year’s Gordan Clarke bursary recipient, Ava Richardson embodies the traits of Mr. Clarke through leadership and a strong passion for improving their community.

Ava identified a need in her city for a new camp to serve a growing number of youth in the community and sprang into action by creating a proposal for a new camp, eventually becoming its first Director.

The camp has revitalized the youth in the community, and in the first two years, there have been close to 600 campers with over 70 student volunteers. All the money that is made at the camp is donated back to the community. The proceeds have helped fund trips for students, paid registration fees for families in need, and sponsored sports teams in the community. To date, the initiative has donated just under $ 40,000 back to local community outreach initiatives.

This incredible student will go on to study policing while also playing varsity soccer at Nipissing University, and we’ll be cheering him on as eh competes his studies and embarks on a future career in policing

We would like to thank all candidates who take the time to apply for our bursary program and a special congratulations those who were successful. The future of public safety is in good hands with these bright and motivated individuals who truly care about their communities and the people within them.
